WHOI Blue Economy Internship program welcomes fourth, and largest, cohort.
Seven students from Cape Cod Community College and five from UMass Dartmouth are participating in the Blue Economy Internship program this spring. Students completed a short course at the George and Wendy David Center for Ocean Innovation to learn about research and career opportunities in the regional Blue Economy workforce, and each student was placed in a WHOI group to gain hands-on experience in areas matching their interests. This year’s research mentors include staff in the DunkWorks rapid prototyping facility, the National Deep Submergence Facility, physical oceanography, and biology labs. Alumni of the program are leveraging their experience to continue their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, gain additional research experiences at WHOI, or even find employment on the WHOI technical staff.
